Working closely with the Eames family, Vitra honors the legacy of Charles and Ray Eames, continuing the development of their iconic designs, adapting them to emerging needs and opportunities.
In recent decades, the average human height has increased by almost 10 cm. This prompted Vitra to offer a taller version of the Lounge Chair, in addition to the classic measurements from 1956. In 2023, a version with fabric covers was introduced. Currently, there are six different veneer options for the wooden shells; with the exception of rosewood, all wood is now sourced from Europe. The composition of the internal layers of the veneered wooden shells has also been revised with sustainability in mind, and the surface or top layer of wood is now treated with a water-based varnish rather than a polyurethane coating. The leather or fabric covers are removable for cleaning or replacement.
